Denali Coven

The Denali Coven is a vampire coven that consists of Tanya, Kate, Carmen, Eleazar, and Garrett. The Denalis are some of the only vegetarian vampires in the world, along with the Cullen Family. They are also very close to the Cullens, being some of the Cullens' most loyal allies and considering themselves an extended family. The Denali Coven is located in Denali, Alaska so that its members can live alongside humans without too much trouble.

History

Originally, the coven consisted of Sasha and her "daughters": Tanya, Kate and Irina. At an unknown time, Sasha also secretly created an immortal child, Vasilii. When the Volturi found out about this, they came to kill the child and the entire coven, but only killed Vasilii and Sasha, since the others knew nothing about the child.

At some point, the vampires Carmen and Eleazar found the three sisters and stayed with them, eventually assuming leadership of the coven. Also at an unknown time, they met the Cullen family, and the two covens became staunch allies and close friends. Tanya developed romantic feelings for Edward Cullen, but he did not reciprocate her feelings and turned her down in a gentlemanly manner.

A vampire named Laurent eventually came to stay with the Denalis. Laurent had recently left a coven of non-vegetarian vampires, and was looking to change his life. He and Irina fell in love. At one point, however, he returned to Forks and hunted Bella Swan, Edward's lover, as a favour to his old friend, Victoria. However, a pack of werewolves, who the Cullens happened to have a treaty with, killed him before he could reach Bella. A little under a year later, the Cullens called for aid from the Denalis. Victoria was creating an army of newborns to destroy the Cullens and kill Bella. The Denalis agreed to help them, if they could avenge Laurent's death by wiping out the werewolf pack. Carlisle refused to allow this, and the Denalis abandoned their long-time friends. The Cullens were forced to form an alliance with the werewolves instead, and successfully killed Victoria and destroyed her army.

The Denalis later felt terrible about abandoning the Cullens. Soon after the battle, the Denalis, except Irina, attended Bella and Edward's wedding. Soon after that, Irina decided to visit the Cullens and finally make peace with them about Laurent's death. When she arrived in Forks, however, she saw Bella hunting with her werewolf friend Jacob Black and what appeared to be an immortal child. Remembering Sasha's fate and her anger at the Cullens for not avenging Laurent's death, she went to the Volturi and reported the Cullens. The rest of the Denalis were once again called upon by the Cullens for aid. Renesmee, the child Irina had seen, was really Bella and Edward's hybrid daughter. The Denalis, after some persuasion, agreed to testify this for the Cullens against the Volturi.

When the Volturi arrived, Irina realized she had been wrong. After admitting this, Caius had her killed to try to provoke a fight. His efforts failed, and the Volturi departed after Aro decided Renesmee was not a threat. The remaining Denalis returned home after the confrontation. They were joined by the nomad Garrett, who was said to have joined the Denalis due to his romantic feelings for Kate.

Volturi

Background

The Volturi are the equivalent of a royal family to vampires. They operate from the city of Volterra, Italy. The Volturi have existed for at least three thousand years, if not more. They are considered the most sophisticated coven, aside from Carlisle's and Tanya's. However, they do not follow a "vegetarian" diet, as seen in New Moon, in which they capture and murder several humans in a carefully planned "meal". They are considered the de facto royal family of vampires, as they are the largest coven and most influential coven in existence . The Volturi deal swiftly and decisively with anything they consider a threat to their coven, or the vampire world. They destroy anyone who attempts to overthrow them, or resist their authority and, at Caius' insistence, have hunted werewolves (true werewolves, not shapeshifters) to near extinction in Europe and Asia.

Purpose

Although they are not the 'official' royal family of vampires, they still act as though they are, and are an incredibly influential coven. They are also considered 'nighttime patrons of the arts'; as, because of their inability to sleep, they study the arts at night. The Volturi act as guardians, keeping the secret society of vampires hidden from the human world as needed. They often send others to travel from Volterra to destroy overzealous covens from exposing vampires by mass eradication of every vampire (and any humans) present. In the Twilight series, the Volturi are becoming an increasing problem, as they want Bella turned into a vampire as soon as possible, while Edward opposes the idea. They also went to Forks, Washington to destroy Victoria's evil coven of young vampires, as they were being a menace to the neighbouring city, Seattle. However, by the time they arrived, the fight had already ended and the werewolves had to escape as the Volturi do not tolerate truces with werewolves. In addition, in the last book "Breaking Dawn" they are seen to come to destroy Renesmee as they wrongly think she is an "Immortal Child" along with those who created and protect her.

Powers

The Volturi are known for their amazing and special powers. Jane and Alec, twins and members of the guard, are credited and worshipped for having the most useful powers. Jane can cause someone to believe that they are feeling pain. This excruciating pain makes it easy for the Volturi to attack and destroy their enemies. Alec's powers are also useful when attacking the enemy. He can cut off all senses making the prey unable to see, hear or feel anything, enabling them to kill the victims without a fight. Aro, one of the leaders, can hear every single thought a person/vampire has ever had. The only way he can do this is if he has physical contact. Marcus, also one of the leaders, can sense relationships. Demetri, a member of the guard, is a tracker. He can track a person down once he has the tenor of their mind. He is known as the best tracker in the vampire world. Renata, also a member of the guard is a shield. She shields Aro and stands by his side at all times. She is described in Breaking Dawn as being so close to Aro it appears she is touching him, moving with him as "being so close , her hands slightly outstretched, her hands look to be "stuck" on Aro's cloak. She shields physical attacks. When the person/vampire is attacking she repels them by confusing them. They end up going in a different direction and are unaware of what they were doing in the first place. Chelsea, newest member to the guard, can manipulate vampires, who are wanted, to join them in Volterra. They formerly had the services of Eleazar, who could see abilities or potential abilities in vampires and humans, though he left after meeting his soulmate, Carmen.

Aro, Caius and Marcus are the leaders of the Volturi. They command the Volturi's guard and act as representatives when dealing with other covens.Aro has the gift to read every thought a human or vampire ever thought through touch.Marcus has the ablility of sensing relationships,as demostrated in New Moon.Unlike Aro and Marcus,Caius is not gifted.

The Wives

Mates of the Volturi leaders. The wives are also powerful figures of authority, but only go to trials with their husbands on behalf of extremely important matters, not leaving Volterra but once every few centuries. Didyme had the power to make an aura of happiness,similar to Jasper's gift.Unlike Didyme,Sulpicia and Athenodora are not gifted.

The Guard

The Volturi Guard is a group of vampires with powerful gifts.The Volturi has been shown to invite only vampires with incredibly powerful gifts that the leaders of the coven see as useful to ensuring that their authority amongst the other covens goes unchallenged.When a vampire is invited into the Volturi,he or she is forced to feel content about joining due to Chelsea's gift the ability to manipulate the emotional bonds of others, usually guaranteeing a swift initiation into the group. Felix and Santiago are the only ungifted Volutri guards. The members are as follows:

Former Members

-Eleazar: A former member of the Volturi. He was invited into the coven because Aro thought his ability to see the gifts and potential gifts of others was useful for when the Volturi scouted for new members. He resigned after meeting his spouse, Carmen, and joined the Denali Coven.
-Didyme: Marcus' wife. She was murdered by Aro when she and Marcus began to discuss leaving the Volturi.

Other

-Gianna (Human secretary)

Gianna is only mentioned in New Moon. She had hopes to become a vampire also but Stephenie Meyer has said that Gianna did not survive and was instead killed to sustain the Volturi. There are supposedly more unnamed Volturi and also numerous witnesses, but they are not named in the books.

New Moon Casting

New Moon sees the introduction of several new characters who are essentially intertwined throughout the Twilight Saga series. Readers of the second book in the quadrilogy have been eagerly anticipating which celebrities will fill the roles of Stephanie Meyers much loved characters in this new movie.

Twilight Celebrities Reprise their Roles

New Moon will of course see the return of Twilight's essential characters. Kristen Stewart will return to play the lead female character Bella Swan as will Robert Pattinson in his role as Edward Cullen. The rest of the Cullen clan will return to the big screen also and of course the actor Billy Burke will return to play Bella's dad, Chief Charlie Swan.

Casting of New Moon's Wolf Pack

The second book in the saga mainly centres around Bella's growing relationship with Jacob Black, who later turns out to be a werewolf (or rather a shape shifter). Fans of the Twilight movie delighted in the news that 17 year old Taylor Lautner will reprise his role as Jacob in the new film. Casting for the other wolf pack members has taken slightly longer to emerge, however the La Push reservation characters have now been named as Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon, Bronson Pelletier and Tyson Houseman. Each member of the New Moon wolf pack are of Native decent.

Casting of The Volturi

Much speculation has been focused on who will play the roles of the ever watchful Volturi vampires. Early casting saw the role of gifted vampire Jane being taken on by 15 year old Dakota Fanning, who is already a well known actress in her own right. British actor Jamie Campbell-Bower has revealed that he has been cast as one of the Volturi leaders, Caius in the New Moon film. Jamie has previously been seen on the big screen in Sweeney Todd alongside Johnny Depp. So far no other members of the Volturi cast have been released but fans of the books and first films are anxious to see who will take on the role of Aro, the Volturi's main character.

New Moon Movie News

Speculation has the filming of New Moon due to start at the end of last month with film locations being in both Italy and Vancouver, however further official confirmation of locations has not yet been released. A domestic release date has been given for New Moon on 20th November 2009, Chris Weitz will be taking the helm as Director for this movie.
